Air Conditioning Uses A Lot of Electricity
So, we’ve talked before about ways smart home automation can save you money, but there’s always new ways we’re finding to cut down on bills. In our previous article, we talked about how you can control the temperature with smart home automation. Air conditioning uses a lot of electricity, though. We recommended using smart home technology to turn it on and off when no one was home, but that’s not enough for some people’s needs. Well, here’s a few more smart home tricks you can do to cut down the bill on your air conditioning.
1. Open Windows at Night
This is an old trick and you probably already know about it. It’s much cooler at night than it is during the day, so rather than run your air conditioning all night long and rack up a huge bill, some people open their windows at night to let the warm air inside circulate with the cool air outside. It works really well. You may have also been able to guess that you can use smart home technology to open windows remotely.
Here’s the great trick, though: it’s possible to also set automated triggers to have your windows open automatically. The problem with opening windows at night is that, during the heat of the summer, it can take a long time for the temperature to get cool after the sun goes down. Who wants to stay up until midnight just to open a window? Well, you don’t have to. With some simple smart home upgrades, you can set your windows to open on a timer. Have them open at midnight every night and go to bed early. Alternatively, you can also set up a temperature trigger. If the house gets too hot after a certain time, the windows will open in response and close automatically when it gets too cold. That way, you don’t have to turn on the AC and you don’t have to stay up waiting for the right time to crack the window.
2. Pull the Shades
When sunlight comes through your windows, the glass focuses the light, making it heat your house up a lot more than it normally would. This can be really helpful for keeping your house warm in the winter, but during the summer, it’s . . . well, it’s a bummer. Turning up the blinds can keep the sunlight from coming in through your window and slow down how fast your house heats up.
Did you know that you can automate your shades as well? Just like windows, you can set triggers to automatically close or open the shades and curtains on your window. This works great for closing the blinds to give you a little privacy at night, but you can also use the temperature triggers to have the blinds close up if the house gets too hot.
3. Automate the Air Conditioning
Remember how we suggested using smart home technology to turn the AC off while you’re away and turn it back on when you’re coming home to cool down your house? This may come as a surprise, but that can be automated, too. Why worry about remembering to turn it on and off with an app? Just set a timer on it. You generally know when you’re going to get off work, right? Well, set the timer to turn the AC on automatically ten to fifteen minutes before you get off work. That way, when you get home, the house will be nice and cool. The rest of the time, the AC is off, so it’s not driving up your power bill.
Smart Home Automation is Amazing!
Smart home automation can do so many things to save you money. What it can do with your air conditioning is just one of many possibilities. Just about anything in your home can be automated to programmable triggers.
It does cost money to upgrade your home for this technology, but the return on investment is really good. The amount of money that you save on your energy bill will more than make up for it. Naturally, it’s expensive to try and do everything at once, so we would recommend that you get a simple upgrade once every 2-3 years. That gives you enough time for the savings to cover the costs of the initial investment, leaving you ready to upgrade again. Continue this for as long as it takes to get the most out of your smart home system.
Increase the Value of Your Home
Smart home upgrades don’t just offer you a return on investment, they also make your home more valuable. The right upgrades can make your house look really attractive on the real estate market if you’re ever looking to sell it and move away (maybe to Hawaii after all the money you save, ha ha!). It’s always a smart investment to invest in smart home.
